It’s been a few days since this news broke so took ya’ll long enough lol…

Anyway , I’m sure some will complain about the race swap but I can easily see Elba capture Duncan’s presence & personality.

I just hope he has the moustache.

@GiverOfInfo - Counterpoint: if your sense of self worth is tied to the racial purity of an action figure, it might be time for some self reflection.

GiverOfInfo - 11/26/2024, 6:21 PM

@Clintthahamster - imagine if the roles were reversed; nothing but excuses and justifications for why it is okay to do to one race what is considered unthinkable to do to another. It's a double standard that's just anti white.

Why is the character named MAN at Arms? This is 2024!
The name should clearly be PERSON AT ARMS.
MGM should be ashamed of themselves! Write your congressPERSON! This aggression will not stand!

@GiverOfInfo - You're right and anyone arguing with you is wrong.

@Clintthahamster - How is it that he makes a comment, you reply with a blatant racist remark TOWARDS him and then you lecture him on why it's ok? Replacing classic white characters is a trope at this point. It wouldn't be a big deal if they didn't do it all the time. Masters Of the Universe already had its share of controversy in the rebooted animated series.

You want to expand the story of Eternia? You want to actually try and be creative? Write new stories and introduce new characters that He-Man has to interact with. Hollywood just keeps retelling the same stories just swapping the race, gender or identity of major characters. Either that or they rewrite the story under their current day bias, like Snow White who couldn't possibly be waiting for the Prince, she has to be a leader now. Ariel in the live action Little Mermaid remake was no only race swapped but the story was changed so she saves herself.

Isn't getting a bit boring? Instead you have to come in with white tears to show that at its core, every argument you make is really a cover to give you a chance to show your real colors. And to reiteriate what @GiverOfInfo said, yes its very simple. It doesn't matter what bullshit moral highground you think you stand on. Racist means against everyone. So you are in fact being a racist. Then you have the nerve to tell him to self reflect? You probably weren't even alive when those "figures" were out.

@UltimaRex another gas lighter. As if somehow your quips and wise ass suggestions take away from the main point. Hollywood is addicted to identity. They can't stop themselves.

@GiverOfInfo - I get it, you are aggrieved that white people are only getting most roles instead of all. Sorry about that. I guess Elba should play one of the black characters from MotU? Without googling, name one.

@CreateNowSlpL8r - "Write new stories and introduce new characters that He-Man has to interact with."

I'm not especially interested in relitigating this with you or any of the other aggrieved dudes on this board. You seem to be comfortable excluding non-white actors from adaptations of all of Shakespeare, all of the Greek Classics, all of 19th century sci fi and 20th century fantasy. I'm not. I think it's okay that modern adaptations of stories make up for the fact that there were essentially zero non-white characters outside of criminals and servants for the vast majority of western civilization. You disagree. We can move on.

@CreateNowSlpL8r - "You probably weren't even alive when those "figures" were out."

Ha ha, I just saw this. Dude, I'm almost 50. I was there at the beginning of Star Wars, the 80s GI Joe figures, Transformers, and, yes, MotU. I remember the first time I saw the first ad for MotU, and asked my dad if I could have them for Christmas. I was obsessed. I still DGAF if one of the characters is black, or all of them, or none of them. It's all fine!

At the end of the day, it's a [frick]ing action figure line whose backstory was an afterthought. They were just trying to capitalize on the popularity of bodybuilding in the 80s. That's it. Y'all think I look silly saying "It's okay if some established characters in He-Man are black," imagine how y'all look acting like MotU is some cultural touchstone of great import.

@GiverOfInfo - "because wakandans don't"

Man, y'all just love to bring up Wakandans, but I don't think that's a very apt comparison, since it's not a comic book property. Since this is a toyline, you should use some of the mostly-black action figure lines as an example.

So. Name one of those.

GiverOfInfo - 11/27/2024, 7:16 AM

@Clintthahamster - or, Idris Elba should be in a movie where there are black characters. Why do white characters have to be for everyone while nonwhite characters remain exclusive to whatever race they are and defined by it? Whites are less than 10% of the world population, a global minority, why do you think anything white should belong to anyone but the opposite is true for nonwhites?

Not every franchise or story needs to have nonwhite characters, just like not every franchise or story needs to have white characters. Idris can go be in a movie with black characters if Masters Of The Universe is a series that doesn't have any major black characters. A diversity quota applied to white stories that would never be considered for black and other nonwhite films is just anti white.

GiverOfInfo - 11/27/2024, 7:19 AM

@Clintthahamster - nah. Wakandans are a great example. You just can't refute it becauase you know it is true.

Also, He-Man had a comic series too, so you're wrong there.

Clintthahamster - 11/27/2024, 8:12 AM

@GiverOfInfo - Again, your only example is Wakanda. The reason why casting a black actor in a traditionally white role is more acceptable than the opposite is because there are vanishingly few non-white roles in sci fi, fantasy, comics, toys, pretty much any pop culture of the 20th century.

"Just create new nonwhite characters!"

We can call him To-Ken!

Y'all just don't want to share your toys with other kids. It's not that deep.

GiverOfInfo - 11/27/2024, 8:23 AM

@Clintthahamster - It's not the only example but it is the easiest and one that can't be refuted. Is it wrong for asian people to be the majority of their chatacters in their stories? Is it wrong for blacks to be the majority of characters in their stories? Why is it wrong for whites - less than 10% of the world population - to be the majority of characters in the stories they create?

@GiverOfInfo - "It's not the only example but it is the easiest and one that can't be refuted."

And yet here we are, still talking about that one example. Name a couple more.

"Why is it wrong for whites - less than 10% of the world population - to be the majority of characters in the stories they create?"

The cast will still be majority white, even with Elba. What y'all are after is "whites only."

But again, we're not talking about adapting Ralph Ellison or Haruki Murakami or John Steinbeck. This is a muscle man toy. Not based on real people, not based on literature, not based on mythological traditions. The characters are mostly white because in the 1980s, toy lines were mostly white. That's it. I get that that status quo serves you well, but for the rest of us who don't mind seeing non-white people in movies and on TV, it's really just nothing at all.

GiverOfInfo - 11/27/2024, 9:28 AM

@Clintthahamster - They do it to real white characters (Hamilton, Beethoven, 1800s Britain) and culture too (vikings), so it doesn't matter if a character is real or fake, if they're white, they're up for grabs, while it would never be okay to do to blacks or other groups in the current year.

"What about Wakanda?" is perfectly valid and irrefutable. Why would I give you another example when you cannot refute the first?
