The bench Matt Guokas, Billy Melchionni and Johnny Green, helped spark the 76ers to a 116-115 victory UPPER MONTCLAIR -Pushing over a run in the last of the seventh inning, Montclair State College gained its tirth straight baseball victory without a loss Wednesday Salvi Rolls 673 Series Infantino 659, Russo 632, Zipsy 629, Simek, Fiore 625, Scerbak 624 Pittsburgh Takes 2-1 Lead in ABA Playoff Pipers Turn Back Muskies, 1 07-99; New Orleans Defeats Dallas, 110-107 defending New Jersey State College Conference champions will start at 1:30 p.m. Montclair State, with wins over Jersey City State and Newark State, stands 2-0 in the conference and with a win could boost its championship stock a great deal. Montclair State's run against St. Peter's came with two out in the seventh inning. Catcher Frank Rossi went all the way to second base on a two errors by the Peaco*cks on his grand ball.

Ken Meek, who has 10 hits in 17 trips to the plate in the young season, crashed a single to score Rossi with the winning run. In the see-saw contest Montclair State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Ken Frank with the bases loaded. St. Peter's came back to tie the score in the third and moved ahead 3-1 with two runs in the fourth inning. Some long bombing by Jim Downing and Frank Rossi tied the game in the fifth inning for the home standing Indians.

Downing tripled, followed a single by Ton Picaro, to score one run with the second coming on a single by second baseman Tom Mc Cormick. Rossi then doubled, sending Mc Cormick to third base but the rally died when Meek struck out and Frank ground-' ed out. Ralph Millern who worked three and two thirds innings of scoreless relief was the winning pitcher for Coach Bill Dioguardi. The senior from Abescon allowed just two hits, struck out six and walked only one hitter. He came up loose balls, he was making the plays and he was getting the ball to the basket." Player-Coach Bill Russell of the Celtics agreed. "Their bench did it. I thought Melchionni hurt us real bad. And Guokas, especially at the start of the fourth period. Green also had a great game." Melchionni only played a total of 12 minutes while Guikas was in for 20 minutes as they gave starters Jones and Greer a breather.

The Lakers rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final quarter to go ahead 107-105 on Mel Counts' tip-in with :50 re-maining and never trailed again. The Derby attracts the stand-out boy. Take Ken Cline (inset), winner of last year's Ail-American. It was his third year of coasting competition and he worked hard for the victory that brought him a $7,500 college scholarship. Are you up to a man-sized challenge? Then the Derby is for you. Boys 11 through 15 are eligible.
