GRINSLADE: Mirtie Clark Grinslade, 97, a resident of Santa Rita and Silver City for almost 65 years, passed away Tuesday, July 25, at Mission Carmichael Health Care Center in Carmichael, Calif. She was born Oct. 14, 1902, in Greenville, Texas, to Dr. and Mrs. George H. Clark. She married Lloyd F. Grinslade on Feb. 21, 1923, in Las Vegas, N.M. She lived in Las Vegas until moving to Santa Rita when the mine reopened in December 1936. She later moved to Silver City when the pit was expanded. She attended New Mexico Normal Institute, now New Mexico Highlands University. She was a member of Delta Sigma Epsilon sorority. She was later a member of the Order of Eastern Star, National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Huguenot Society. She received the Grand Cross of Color for her work in the International Order of Rainbow for Girls. She was baptized in the Southern Methodist Church and later was an active member of the Valley Community Church for 55 years. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joan Clark Grinslade, in 1954; her husband, Lloyd F. Grinslade, in 1971; her son, Robert Clark Grinslade, in 1989; a sister, Thalia Griffin; and brothers, Rowen Clark and Warren Clark. She is survived by her son, Lloyd F. Grinslade Jr., and his wife, Patricia, of Fair Oaks, Calif.; grandchildren, Susan Ricci and her husband, Tom, of Sacramento, Calif., Terry Lynn Dille and her husband, Ed, of Antioch, Calif., and William Lloyd Grinslade of Vacaville, Calif.; a cousin and his wife, Dr. and Mrs. Gann Clark of Hewett, Texas; a nephew, George Clark, and his wife, Karen, of Houston; a great-nephew, Cris Coffyn, and his wife, Brenda, of DeSoto, Texas; a niece, Grace E. Detterick of Las Vegas, N.M.; a nephew, Jerry Detterick, and his wife, Barbara, of Andrews, Texas; and a great-nephew, Robert Detterick, and his wife, Michelle, and family of Silver City. ENRIQUEZ: Jesus J. Enriquez, 74, a resident of Santa Clara, entered into eternal rest Friday, Aug. 4, at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. Mr. Enriquez was born Nov. 2, 1925, in Santa Rita to Pascual and Filiberta (Chavoya) Enriquez. On Nov. 14, 1948, he married his loving wife of 51 years, Josefina Barajas. In 1982, he retired after 36 years of service as a truck driver with Chino Mines Co. He was also a member of United Steelworks union Local 890. Mr. Enriquez enjoyed hunting and fishing, the outdoors and being with his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Josefina, of the family home; three sons, Richard Enriquez and his wife, Nora, of Las Cruces, Ramon "Chuck" Enriquez and his fiancee, Yolanda Flores, of Las Cruces, and Gilbert Enriquez and his wife, Cindy, of Hurley; and three daughters, Margaret Morales and her husband, Antonio Morales Sr., of Stanton, Calif., Virginia Ortiz and her husband, Johnny, of Anaheim, Calif., and Martha Jimenez and her husband, Tim, of Arenas Valley. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a son, Lawrence J. Enriquez, in December 1968. He enjoyed cleaning his vehicles, taking care of his yard, and especially spoiling his grandchildren. He loved long walks with his dog as well as taking care of his wife and family. MARTIN: John Stanwood Aleman Martin Jr., 79, a resident of La Union the past 20 years and lifelong resident of the Mesilla Valley, passed away Sunday, July 30, at Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso, Texas. Mr. Martin was born May 14, 1921, in Hatch, the ninth child of John S.A. and Cynthia Reeve Martin. As a child he attended Vilas and Moorehead schools in El Paso. He played football while attending El Paso High School. During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines as a gunner on a hospital ship. After his discharge, he worked with his brothers, Jerome and Donald Martin, in their flight-training school for World War II pilots. Throughout his life, he raised livestock and in the 1970s was a member of the New Mexico Pork Growers Association. He was an avid outdoorsman and was happiest roaming about the deserts of New Mexico and Texas. Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Ida Martin of the family home; three daughters, Susan Heddlesten and husband, Mel, of Satanta, Kan., Frances Schumacher of Las Cruces, and Ruth Martin and husband, Carlton Penn, of San Simon, Ariz.; and two sisters, Ruth Barksdale of Las Cruces and June Shaw of Sparks, Nev. Other survivors include four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Family and friends may visit from 4-6 p.m. today in Baca's Funeral Chapels, 300 E. He retired from Chino Mines in 1986 after serving as president of International Association of Machinists Local 1563. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was involved in many community activities. These included the Grant County Sheriff's Posse and the Gila Fly Fishers. He was president of the Gila Fish and Gun Club, and was instrumental in the restoration of Lake Roberts and the development of the Grant County Shooting Range. He also served on the Catron County Depredation Committee and was dedicated to projects for the development of water for wildlife. Remembrances will be held at a later date.
DILLON: Augustus "Gus" Dillon passed away suddenly Monday, July 24, in Mimbres. Born Oct. 15, 1932, in Nova Scotia, Canada, he came to the Sacramento, Calif., area to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1952. Later that year, he was drafted into the Army and served during the Korean War. After his tour of duty, he returned to work for the Southern Pacific until he retired as a locomotive engineer. He was preceded in death by his father, William. He leaves behind his mother, Leah, in Nova Scotia; his loving wife, Linda, of Mimbres; daughters, Mindy and Cindy; grandchildren, Spencer and Shelby of Sacramento; and brothers, Melvin, Bradley and James, and sisters, Carol and Paulette, and their families in Canada. His passing is mourned by many relatives and friends, especially the Bandits golfing group. Services were held at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, Calif., on Saturday, July 29, at noon.

PERKINS: Maxine Clarke Perkins, 74, of Silver City, formerly of Marin County, Calif., passed away Friday, July 28, in Gila Regional Medical Center. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright Funeral Home. No services are planned at this time. Ms. Perkins was born Oct. 16, 1925, in San Francisco. She was the daughter of James Mack Lowe and Marguerite Eleanor Clarke. She is survived by her son, Donald A. Perkins, and his wife, Diane, of Silver City; one grandson, Matthew W. Perkins of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and numerous loving friends. Ms. Perkins grew up in San Francisco and graduated from Lowell High School. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in paleontology. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Sonora, Calif., and worked in the county assessor's office, later moving back to the San Francisco area, where she worked as an accountant. Ms. Perkins later became a professional accountant and worked as an enrolled agent tax consultant. In 1958, she and her son moved back to Marin County, where she lived for 42 years. In 1998, she retired, and in May 2000 moved to Silver City to be near her son and daughter-in-law. Ms. Perkins was a member of several professional accounting organizations. WORD: William G. "Bill" Word passed away Monday, July 24, in El Paso, Texas. He was 87 years old. Mr. Word was born April 23, 1913, in Canyon, Texas, to Anna Lee and Will Word. On Dec. 3, 1942, he was married to Amy Jane Doorman in Clarendon, Texas. He was a former businessman and longtime resident of Silver City. Mr. Word was a decorated World War II Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific. He is survived by two brothers, Bob Word of Orlando, Fla., and Al Word of Lordsburg. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, and 18 great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service is planned for this fall.

He was a self-taught and very creative silversmith, carpenter and handyman, building his own lawn furniture and Christmas displays, and many other cherished treasures. He also loved gardening. He especially loved his vegetable garden, winning several awards for his produce. But he was most known and appreciated around the community for his great sense of humor and his very friendly personality. He loved starting up a conversation with anyone who wanted to talk. He was a very giving and loving man. He leaves behind many friends and family members who love him very much. He was an unforgettable man and will be sadly missed by all. Mr. Nañez is survived by a son, Jimmy Nañez, and his wife, Teresa, of Blue Ridge, Texas; three daughters, Lydia Wood of Las Cruces, Della Acosta and her husband, Bill, of Silver City, and Annette Acosta-Parra and her husband, Andy, of Deming; and a brother, Joe Nañez of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a very special friend and neighbor, Larry Quevedo, and his family. LUNA: Genaro Chavez Luna, 85, of Fort Bayard passed away Sunday, July 23, in Fort Bayard Medical Center. Visitation for Mr. Luna will be from 4-7 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home, followed by evening memorial services at 7, with the Rev. Scott Penrod officiating. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bright Funeral Home with Chaplain David Strain officiating. Interment with full military honors will be at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Mr. Luna was born Dec. 12, 1914, in Hillsboro. He was the son of Federico Luna and Romelia Chavez Luna. Mr. Luna is survived by his brother, Fred Luna, and his wife, Susie, of Santa Clara; one niece, Rebecca Salazar of El Paso, Texas; one nephew, Fred "Stretch" Luna of Albuquerque; two great-nephews, Claudio Salazar of Silver City and Freddie Luna of Albuquerque; one precious cousin, Lydia Padilla of Hurley; and numerous other relatives. Mr. Luna was preceded in death by his parents and his cousin, Martin Padilla. Mr. Luna grew up in Hillsboro and attended schools there. When his aunt passed away, his mother, Romie, and grandmother, Deloris Chavez, took in the children to raise. He was raised with six boy and two girl cousins. Mr. Luna often remembered his mother would always order all their clothes and shoes from Montgomery Ward and they were always dressed alike. All the children thought that was very special. Mr. Luna hauled wood on the back of a burro in Hillsboro and he would often give rides to children on his favorite burro, Jennie. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942. After leaving the Army, he returned to Hillsboro, and was his mother's and grandmother's caretaker. He worked at Black Hawk Mine in Hanover as a trimmer. Mr. Luna loved to sing and to go to the Apple Festival in Hillsboro. The memories of Mr. Luna will long be remembered by his many friends and family. KAISER: John Joseph Kaiser, 79, passed away Monday, June 26, at the Long Term Care Unit of Seneca District Hospital in Chester, Calif. He had been a resident of Chester for the past two years, moving there from Las Cruces, and had been a longtime resident of the Battle Creek, Mich., area. He was a former resident of Silver City. He was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Battle Creek. He retired from General Foods Corp., after 30 years of service. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a crew member aboard the USS Enterprise at the outbreak of the war. He reentered the service to serve during the Korean War. He was a devout Catholic and attended Christ the King Catholic Church in Chester, and was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. A ham radio operator with the call sign of K8DUE, he was a longtime private pilot, owning and operating numerous aircraft for pleasure and using them as a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of the Chester American Legion Post and a former member of the Las Cruces Elks Lodge; and he enjoyed the game of golf. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Marcella Kaiser, of Chester; a son, J. Kaiser of Booth Bay Harbor, Maine; stepchildren, Charles Mead of Battle Creek and Diane Volke of Chester; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. Private family visitations were followed by a celebration of a Mass of Christian burial Friday, July 7, at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors took place in the Chester District Cemetery. MADRID: Michael Leon Madrid, 43, of Silver City entered eternal rest Monday, July 24, at Gila Regional Medical Center. He was born April 11, 1957, in Silver City to Rumaldo Madrid and Nellie Flores. He lived the majority of his life in California before returning to Silver City to be close to his mom. He retired from an electric company as a senior administrator and spent the last years helping his dad with a construction company. He took great pride in carpentry, especially making cabinets and painting. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1975-78. Cremation has taken place. A vigil service will be held tonight at 8 at Baca's Funeral Chapels, with Father Dan Porter officiating. Interment will be at a later date. Mr. Madrid is survived by his mother, Nellie Madrid of Silver City; his father, Rumaldo Madrid of Santa Ana, Calif.; his brothers, Arthur Madrid and wife, Linda, of Westminster, Calif., Abie Madrid and wife, Lorraine, of Silver City, and Richard Madrid and wife, Patty, of Santa Ana; and his sisters, Stella Pratt and husband, Alan, of Westminster, Margaret Vasques and husband, Robert, of Orange County, Calif., Isabella Cedillo and Gilbert of Westminster, and Jennifer Madrid of Silver City. She was a very loving mother and grandmother, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. AGUAYO: Angelina L. "Angie" Aguayo, 80, of Gallup passed away Saturday, July 1, at her home. She had lived with her daughter, Lorraine M rquez, for the past seven years in Silver City. A memorial Mass was celebrated July 5 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Park. Survivors include her daughter, Lorraine M rquez, and her husband, Charles, of Silver City; a daughter-in-law, Lucy Aguayo of Gallup; a sister, Irene Bustos of Albuquerque; and seven grandchildren, Charles J. GOMEZ: Andres P. Gomez III, 51, of Santa Clara passed away Monday, July 17, at his home with his family by his side, after a six-month battle with cancer. The family will receive friends today from 6-7 p.m. at Baca's Funeral Chapels. The prayer vigil will begin at 7 p.m. with the Santa Clara Funeral Ministry leading in the holy rosary. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Friday at 11 in the morning at Santa Clara Catholic Church with Father Michael Lindsay officiating. The rite of committal and interment will follow at the Santa Clara Cemetery. He was born Nov. 6, 1948, in Santa Clara to Andrews D. and Cyrilda Gomez. Except for the period he served in the U.S. Army, he lived in Santa Clara all his life and was most recently employed with the Bayard Housing Authority. He was a hardworking man who loved the simple pleasures life had to offer. He enjoyed fishing with his sons, having a morning cup of coffee at the M&A Cafe, and joking with his friends at the bingo parlor. He served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 after having volunteered for military service. He was honorably discharged in 1974. He was a beloved role model to his children and, above all, taught each to be his or her own person, but to always stick together. He cherished his mother, enjoyed getting together with his sisters and brothers, and had a handful of lifelong friends he trusted very much. Mr. Gomez is survived by his three children, Patricia Gomez Trujillo, and her husband, Chris, of Pasadena, Calif., Andres T. Gomez and his wife, Tracie, and their three children, Andres, Alejandro and Antonio, of Santa Clara, and Daniel Gomez of the home; and their mother, Olga T. Gomez of Hurley. He is also survived by his mother, Cyrilda Gomez of Santa Clara; and eight siblings, Rosario Gomez and his wife, Josephine, of La Puente, Calif., Monica Gomez of Pico Rivera, Calif., Mike Gomez of Santa Clara, Corrine Morales of Whittier, Calif., Enrique Gomez and his wife, Ramona, of Silver City, Virginia Alvarado of Whittier, Petra Ramirez and her husband, Robert, of Santa Clara, and Teresa Garcia and her husband, Manuel, of Bayard. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews, an extended family, and a host of friends, who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his father, Andres D. Gomez.
