Synopsis - A light westerly flow has settled in, with the best potential for showers and storms during the overnight and early morning hours across coastal waters. This pattern will continue until the weekend, when the flow shifts back to the east. Seas of 1 to 2 feet are expected through the week, with higher seas in and around Thunderstorms.

DISCUSSION
Issued at 215 AM EDT Wed Jul 10 2024 A weak U/L low will persist over the Florida peninsula today and Thursday, but will gradually fill with time. An U/L ridge over the central Atlantic will bridge across the Florida peninsula and extend across the southern tier of the U.S. to the central Rockies. This will hold over the region through the remainder of the period, however there will be a slight weakness in the ridge over the southeast U.S. and Florida.

Remnant Saharan dust will hold over much of the forecast area today which will suppress pops central and south. Onshore westerly flow will persist which will promote a few showers near the coast during the morning hours, with slightly higher pops interior as the convection pushes inland and areal coverage expands a bit.
Temperatures will remain above climatic normals, even though there will likely be extensive high cloudiness over the forecast area as easterly U/L flow pushes cirrus from convection over the central/eastern peninsula back to the west...with high cloudiness persisting tonight. Transition day on Thursday as Saharan dusts exits the region and convective instability increases as deep layer moisture east of the area gradually advects back over the forecast area. PCPW values near or above 2 inches expected on Friday, over the weekend, and into next week.

Surface high will hold over the area with weak boundary layer flow during the weekend, although slight easterly push seems likely. This will promote highest pops over the coastal counties of west central and southwest Florida during the mid/late afternoon hours. The weak flow will continue into next week. Given the high PCPW values and weak boundary layer flow, this will create favorable conditions for locally heavy rain and possible flooding of streets and low lying areas. Threat for consecutive days of heavy rain in area river basins over the weekend and into next week will create the potential for minor river flooding, with the exception of the Withlacoochee.
